Just in case you still think that what the Occupy Wall Street movement has been fighting for is all quite unnecessary, please note that the United States Senate is very shortly to vote on a very terrifying bill indeed. The following is from the ACLU website, and you can get more details there:

"The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself."

The vote will take place this Monday or Tuesday. Check out the ACLU for what you can do about it.

the police were supposed to protect us from people like those you might find in a biker gang. But what about when the police ARE a biker gang? Here we observe a police officer, in full macho mode, beating a protester in Oakland, November 3. Why? The cop has all the arrogant demeanour of some thin-skinned superman who feels his honour has been slighted somehow, and he must assert himself. From a position of perfect security, this pig (I will not dignify him with the title of policeman) strikes the very brave Kayvan Sabehgi.

Mr. Sabehgi is a veteran of the Iraq war. His behaviour is entirely peaceful, as you can see in the clip. Could it be this peacefulness which so enrages the furious little potentate? As the Good Book says, the darkness hateth the light.

I would like to believe that piggy was attacking in sheer frustration at his own shame. If so, there is hope that some day he will become a man again, instead of a pig. He might decide to walk on two legs again, and get out of the mire of his cruelty and self-pity, or whatever that mess is in there.

And right near the end of the video, I believe there is a woman protesting this brutality, but still trying to appeal to what is best in the police. Such patience! She is still able to hope that piggy has a human heart. And yes, she is right to do so.

It's enough to make you weep. These people strengthen me. If any of the OWS protestors anywhere is reading this, I want you to know that you strengthen me. You do indeed turn the other cheek, and out of strength, not weakness. Your peace is the peace of Christ, and I say this about all of you, whether you are Christians or not. The peace of OWS is stronger than the violence of the state.

The people have the courage to stand up to the police. When will the police show some courage to stand up to those who are telling them how to dance? Or perhaps courage is not the issue: perhaps the cops really do love the state more than they do the people. Perhaps they are glad of what they are doing and enjoy it. But look what you're growing, porky: contempt. More and more people are noticing your lack of guts and your willful blindness to other people's humanity and rights. They may have the mace in their eyes, but you are the one who is truly blind. Don't you see the strings attached to your limbs? Take a look up there and see who's holding them. That's it: the 1%. That's who you are serving and protecting.

And look at the discipline of the protestors! This never ceases to impress me. No one breaks ranks in a panic, no one hurls himself at the state's obedient gardener in a fury, playing into the hands of a state that is aching to prove OWS "violent."

I remain a Christian, because I don't know a better, more reasonable, or more convincing way, and because I believe I have been given the grace to see some truth here that might otherwise look crazy on some levels. And pissed off as I often am these days by the pharisaical self-righteousness of atheist fundamentalists, I have to say I detect in some of them a rage against the God they claim not to believe in.

But I can tell you I share this rage. I can give you the theologically correct line that God is perfect and without sin (and I believe this) but I am still angry at Him. I have been having some very persistent problems lately, and they are not even that bad compared to what a lot of people have. I am deeply frustrated.

So what gives? Why does God let the world remained fucked up? Why are we still waiting for the Second Coming? No one really has an answer to this do they?

Fuck it all. Fuck it all. What can you trust God for? What if you ask for bread and get a scorpion? I suppose you just keep waiting. the idea seems to be that you are not to put God to the test. Whatever.

I don't think I would ever be capable of becoming an atheist. But I could very bitterly turn against God.

And does He love us UNCONDITIONALLY or not? And of what does this love consist? What do we GET from it (and I do not care if that sounds mercenary)? And can we therefor give up worrying about the afterlife?

When your life is fucked up, is this God's punishment? Judgement? Is it your cross to bear as Jesus bore his, and can you feel you are serving God in your suffering? Is there honour in your suffering?

I hate this life. I truly hate it. I am not at all sucidal, nor without hope. But sometimes I hate this world and want to shit all over it.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF TONY CAMPOLO?

I did years ago, but didn't pay a lot of attention. Well, recently I've been checking out a lot of YouTubes featuring him. I don't agree with everything he says, but I agree with a lot. I like his solid, loving, earthy Christianity. This is a man who is both compassionate and no-nonsense. Actually, he even reminds me a little of Don Rickles. Check out this Youtube of him talking about consumer culture. Though he doesn't mention the Occupy movement here, I think what he says here is eminently relevant to it. You may think it odd that a self-described pornographer and cultural bolshevik such as myself would admire an Evangelical and self-described "conservative," but there are a lot of strange overlappings in the world that people miss.

And this is one reason why I have grown to hate that climate one sees on the net that pits religious people against secular ones and sees one party as all good and the other as all evil (or idiotic). But that's another story.

Forgive me, those opposed to OWS, for being so vulgar as to have to make a rather obvious point. I'll get to it in a moment.

Now, every society has at least one or two very stupid ideas that even otherwise intelligent people often believe, for whatever reason. In earlier days it may have been the divine right theory of kings, or that people couldn't handle any measure of democracy, or that one race had a right to own another.

In our present age, we entertain some very stupid ideas about rich people. In other ages people were stupid about priests or aristocrats, but ours is stupid about the capitalist bourgeoisie.

Now you may have heard about the recent flap over Governor Rick Perry of Texas mistaking a fictional satirical character ("Jeremy, 38") for an actual Occupy protestor in Toronto. Jeremy is a creation of anti-Occupy satirist Mark Schatzger, and here is what Schatzger (via Jeremy) had to say:

“It’s weird protesting on Bay Street. You get there at 9 a.m. and the rich bankers who you want to hurl insults at and change their worldview have been at work for two hours already. And then when it's time to go, they're still there. I guess that's why they call them the one per cent. I mean, who wants to work those kinds of hours? That's the power of greed.” – Jeremy, 38

Now you can see what Schatzger is getting at. It's designed to play on those old deeply anchored puppet strings of guilt and shame those of us who are not millionaires have woven into us from an early age. Not that we are ashamed of not being millionaires, necessarily, but we are deeply ashamed to question (wait for it . . .) their right to all that money.

That's right. You don't question what a millionaire did for his money -- whether he actually earned it or not. But of course, the reason why we are so programmed into not asking such a question is very real: the truth about the rich is very embarrassing to them -- so embarrassing that many of them, even, do not want to know it about themselves. They have some very tenacious delusions about themselves, that is for sure. And their egos defend these delusions with the ferocity of a drowning man whose life preserver is being stolen.

Oh the righteousness of the indignant ego! Oh the beleaguered rights and reputations of bankers!

Never underestimate just how much of the mumbo-jumbo people are fooled and intimidated into accepting is just sheer bluff. It's really quite astonishing. An even half way honest person will every day of her life feel like the little child in the famous "Emperor's New Clothes" fairytale who can see the Emperor is indeed naked. Will she have the self-confidence, the moxie to say, "dude, your dick is flapping in the breeze. Put some fucking clothes on." Or will she cower and not trust her own eyes and assume the Emperor (or Mark Schatzger, or the class he toadies to) really is wearing something, despite the evidence of her own eyes?

In Canada, the top 1% owns about one third of the property. It's even worse in the U.S. Now tell me, you defenders of the rich, please, and this brings me to the vulgar and obvious point I started saying I simply must make: show me your evidence that 1% of Canada does approximately one third of all the work. Does this enquiry not simply flatten all claims to the "justice" of the 1% owning so much? They would not only have to be the hardest working people in the country, they would have to outstrip the average Canadian many, MANY times in industriousness.

Ah, but I'm sure there is some rationalization. But we don't hear it so much, do we, because the challenge to the "right" of the rich to so much wealth is so seldom made in the first place.

BTW: How did Mark Schatzger get his job? Did he put in long hours? Take big risks? Well, whatever he DID do, I can tell you what he DIDN'T do once he got that job: think. It is possible, for all I know, that Mark Schatzger busted his ass to get his job, but one thing is for sure: he doesn't bust his ass doing it.

I wonder what is going on in the hearts of these cops. Is it some inner, tragic conflict between following orders and being human, or is this all in a day's work for them?

Maybe they should try to put being men and women before being instruments of the corporate owned state. They have a duty to take from us the temptation to see them as things, as subhumans, as objects without souls.

Or is it possible that that is the strategy?

And the hell of it is, in the midst of this ridiculous and unjust act clearly designed to thwart OWS in Seattle, the cops have such an air of impenetrable dignity as if it is THEY who are the patient ones who must put up with a load of crap. However, I think I did see this self-assurance a little rattled once or twice. This is very powerful video. The camera is right in the cops' faces, absolutely unintimidated by authority.

And notice the anger yet self-restraint of the protestors. They will not be baited. Will this be how fascism of the state and fascism in the heart will be beaten? I think so. I felt enraged at first, a kind of powerless rage. But I am inspired by OWS. My powerless anger became an anger of strength.

THE TRUE FACE OF THE 1%

Yes, criticize them and you are not even human, apparently. What are those of us in the 99%? "Monkeys," it would seem. Check out this video at the 2:05 mark. Actually the whole thing is good, but at 2:05 we find the 1% and their usual bullshit: yes, without them there would be no jobs! And those of us who question this are "monkeys."

Every ruling class that has ever existed tells lies about its own supposed indispensability. When fascists rule, we are told their imperialist armies are actually protecting us all from war. When priests rule, we are told they are necessary to connect us to God. When aristocrats rule, we are informed that all that is good in life comes from the "bloods" and their distinguished pedigrees.

And when business rules, we are told the rest of us unwashed slobs would have nothing without them.

Such arrogance makes those adopt it insane. And it also promotes in them the deep conviction that those who oppose them are not even human. Hence, the peculiar person in the above video with his repeated cries of "monkey" at one who dared question him.

Let me turn the discussion to a deeper human level. I am a Christian. But not a very good one. I do not love this man and his haughty cries of "monkey." My thoughts about him are decidedly not Christian. But that is one more reason why I so much admire the Occupy movement in the streets: despite provocation they have remained peaceful and determined. I take strength from them. This little man who cries "monkey" assaults his own soul in his worship of false gods.

These false gods are doomed.

Yes, as the above mentioned video says, this is a class war. And it is also a war between those who see human faces all around them, and those who see mostly monkeys. I am convinced those with the better vision shall prevail.

God bless OWS. To the man who cried "monkey": your attitude infuriates at first, but then it works against you. You strengthen our determination, and you help convince those who accept your rule to change their minds. Who is the monkey then, if you are subverting yourself?

ST. PAUL'S IN LONDON CLOSED

Yes, I am an Anglican myself. But I can't wonder whether the Church is backing the politics of the establishment here. Here is a quotation from The Guardian:

"Canon Peter Bruinvels, a member of the General Synod, said the financial losses caused by the closure were a tragedy. 'Clearly now the demonstrators should pack up their tents and go. St Paul's is a greater cause than theirs and they should acknowledge that. The cathedral is losing £20,000 for every day it is shut. It gets no state support. It cannot afford to be shut.'"

"St. Paul's is a greater cause than theirs"? Jesus Christ loves everyone without exception, but does he not take sides against the exploitative rich? How is the Occupy movement not the cause of Christ? It sounds to me like Canon Bruinvels has bought into that old and absurd idea that life in Christ has something to do only with transcendance and has nothing to do with how we conduct ourselves in this world. I am afraid the Canon is mistaken.

Let me paraphrase this question, which thinly conceals a great deal of hostility. What the "what do you want" question really means is this:

"You protestors want too much that we don't want you to have. So we shall pretend you are incoherent. We shall pretend you are saying nothing. You are a very large body that has pulled off an unprecedented anarchist miracle of being organized, lucid, intelligent, and non-violent without having some small clique at your head that can be corrupted by the power of leadership or destroyed by us killing them, corrupting them, slandering them, or otherwise neutralizing them. We shall set limits on what and how much you want. When you modify and reduce your demands to a level acceptable to us, we will pretend that only then are you actually saying anything. Cut down your demands. And while you're at it, fight amongst yourselves doing so, split the 99% up into warring pieces. When you are done, we shall make an alliance with whoever suits us, and use that fraction to sweep away the rest."

That is what "what do you want" means. And we will not fall for it.

Speaking of which, why is a guy like this on the public payroll anyway? He is already on that odious "Dragon's Den" TV show, sucking at the public trough. Aren't the millions from his own enterprises enough for him? Is it possible that we don't hear often enough from millionaires in this country? Brookfield Asset Management is the one calling for the eviction of peaceful demonstrators in Zuccotti park in NYC. The cops can only evict the demonstrators if Brookfield labels them trespassers.

There is a site where you can very easily let Brookfield know you are opposed to this eviction. Of course, you don't have to be Canadian, but I should think it would be particularly important for us Canadians to speak out about this.

And please don't assume it's too late! You never know how this might work out. The Occupy Wall Street protestors are fighting for all of us who are not content to be dictated to any more by corporate power.

So I am moved here to state my own position: I DO beleive in the Holy Spirit, and the divinity of Jesus Christ. I also believe in His literal death and resurrection as the way to salvation for our sins AND ultimately, from all manner of pain, injustice, and evil.

And since there seem to be a growing number of atheists who think (or pretend to think) that the only variety of Christian who exists is of the fundamentalist variety, let me declare a few things I DO NOT believe:

I DO NOT believe that only Christians are saved.
I DO NOT believe the world is only 5,000 years old.
I DO NOT believe that homosexuality is a sin (read my porn). God made gayness.
I DO NOT believe in the infallibility of scripture, important as scripture is.

I VERY STRONGLY SUSPECT and am coming to believe in the truth of Universalism: that is, the doctrine that all people, one way or another, if not in this life then in a later one, shall be eternally reunited with God.

I am more than a little fed up with the threat of hell hanging over my head; I think it rots one's love of God.

And I am more than a little fed up with the fuck-the-dog patriotism of the fundamentalists, who seem to think that love of Jesus must entail a hearty approval American Imperialism.

A caution to the deniers of the Holy Spirit: do not let the viciousness and willful stupidity of fundamentalists drive you to close your mind or your heart to God in whatever fashion He/She presents Herself.

It has often occurred to me that what keeps the doctrines of hell going in the Christian church has less to do with scripture than hell's proponents would have us believe.

It may be a matter of simple hate, of a desire to see some people unforgiven and roiling in the gulf of fire forevermore.

But perhaps even more significantly than the hate, belief in hell comes from a lack of faith in God. Under the guise of saying that God has such authority that he must somehow have the right to torture certain people forever, the hell-believer actually has inadequate trust in God's power.

The hell-believer, with his lack of faith in God's power and God's realm, projects this world into the beyond, convinced that the limitations we know in this earthly existence are binding everywhere else and for eternity. In this world, for example, there seems so often to be a downside to everything. So much of what is good must be paid for. In fact, this is so much the case that we can't even IMAGINE paradise. Any writer who has tried to portray a perfect world knows that what she comes up with is boring and insipid. Some kind of evil or difficult conflict must be introduced.

Therefor, if we make the mistake of assuming that the world beyond this one must be limited by this one or limited by the imaginations of people in this world, we have a hard time believing EVERYONE shall know forever the bliss of God. Surely there must be losers for winning to mean anything!

The hell-believer is loyal to a particular interpretation of scripture, but becomes so at the price of putting this interpretation above faith and God. It seems to me that those fundamentalists who think themselves particularly pious are actually idolatrous.

Recently I spoke pretty positively about Ralph Harris's GOD'S ASTOUNDING OPINION OF YOU. And I still stand behind those comments. But then on page 153 I encounter this:

"Our public school system is not set up to accurately equip our children to know who they are. I don't mean to lay blame, but I do mean to illuminate. Public schools lump saved and unsaved children together . . ."

And I think I felt a cold draft from Hell. "Saved and unsaved children"?

I can see how many of us Christians totally creep out the rest of the world. Some of us seem so nice, rational, well-intentioned, and then that Us and Them stuff comes up, right in the middle of the most patient and forgiving talk. Yes, it's not that we hate or judge the non-Christians, it's just that in our own gentle, mild-mannered way, we assert that they are all going to be damned.

Man. I think the Devil got a hold of God's revolution in Christ and has seriously corrupted it. The "Good News" seems to have a great many qualifications to it, doesn't it?

ROB BELL AGAIN

I've been thinking some more about Rob Bell, and since my last post on him I have read his LOVE WINS, which I highly recommend, by the way. As for those of my fellow Christians with pinched hearts, a need to control the gates of heaven, and who say Rob Bell is a universalist, they may wish to consider these words of his from page 115:

"Will every body be saved,
or will some perish apart from God forever because of
their choices?

"Those are questions, or more accurately, those are
tensions we are free to leave fully intact. We don't need
to resolve them or answer them because we can't, and so
we simply respect them, creating space for the freedom
that love requires."

Is this universalism? It seems to me that it leaves open the possibility that universalism is true, but clearly Bell is not committing himself to universalism here, and is not pretending to. Frankly, I wish he had. So why are the pharisees after him? And why are they so upset at the mere possibility that no one is damned?

It is interesting that they claim scripture on their side. Let me leave aside the scriptural argument for the time being and instead ponder this: why do they WANT to believe in hell? Why are they people who would clearly be bitterly disappointed if it could be proven to them that scripture does not support a doctrine of eternal torture for some people?

Could it be that pride says there is no point in being one of the sheep if there are no goats?

highly Puritan temperment. For example, I have experienced for years nagging self-doubt about various personal failures, and live constantly with a sense of God's judgement and disapproval upon me. I bought this book hoping it would be a well needed antidote to my usual God-as-Judge approach.

I have not been disappointed. And this is not a fatuous sermon that tells us that we are all perfect little doobies who don't need to change anything. Much of what Harris does here is to stress that Christ's sacrifice makes us alright with God.

about how unhappy Canadians supposedly are that we are going to have a federal election soon? In the first place, I just can't believe that we are all such a bunch of whiners that an opportunity to exercise what precious little democracy we have is considered an insurmountable burden. What is the problem? Is it the arduous walk (or drive) to the polling station? Don't sweat it. We need the exercise. Is it the cost? Well, the 2006 election cost $270 million dollars, according to the CBC. Divide that up amongst the 34 million of us and it's less than 8 bucks a citizen. If you factor in that not all citizens are voters or taxpayers, it comes to somewhat more than that, I would suppose. Who knows, it might even be enough for an inexpensive dinner and a drink. Well, boo-hoo-hoo. In other countries people get shot by the police for just asking for democracy, let alone practicing it. But we need more cheeseburgers, eh? Maybe the supposed problem with having an election is listening to the coverage of it in the mass media. But I think the very people most likely to find this a reason not to have an election are the very people most able to simply tune out what they don't want to hear. They will go back to sleep soon enough. But I have my doubts that people in this country are so reluctant to have a chance to vote. I suspect the mass media have some patronizing image of "Joe Sixpack" in their heads they like to peddle: "you don't like elections, do you Joe Sixpack? There's a good Joe Sixpack. I've been taking a look at a book I read years ago by Thomas Merton called Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander. There's just one highly illuminating and quotable passage after another. Take a look at this, for example:

Now, I peruse this magazine pretty often, and I can say these guys know their tanks well and would never, for example, mistake a Panzer II for a Panzer III or a Sherman for a Chaffee. The modellers featured in this publication build stuff that is way out of my own very humble league.

But mistaking Lenin for Stalin? We modellers are known for our pedantry -- endless debates have occurred, for example, about what just the right shade of olive drab is appropriate for a Sherman tank. So I think I can be excused if I express my own dismay at a historical faux pas that makes one wonder just how much the buttons and badges crowd really understands about the war in its larger and more important contexts. A nice suit, I think, for all those who find armour sexy. that the birth of Christ in the world is not only a religious miracle but a political one. Christ's life on earth was like the battle of Kursk: the turning event in a great war, the beginning of the protracted and agonizing end of the Enemy.

The war I speak of is the war against sin and suffering and death, and it is fought out in the heart of every individual and in the political and economic structures we live in.

The birth of Christ is the promise of salvation to the suffering and forgiveness of the wicked (and all of us are some of both).

This is also a time of great mystery, a time which religious doctrines can to some extent elucidate, but not explain.

This is the time when God begins to retake His lost creation. How could She ever have lost it? Why the immeasurable distance between us and our Creator? No one can understand, and for some this very question is the death of anything that might be called religion.

But it need not be. And on both sides of the great divide God acts and sees and loves.

WOMEN'S FASHION MAGAZINES AND HOBBYIST MODELLING MAGAZINES (#1)

The similarity is simply this: both present the ideal. Fashion magazines present the perfect woman (or at least, what we are to take as such) as opposed to something less. Hobby modelling magazines (such as Finescale Modeler or Military Modeller) present the reader with pictures and articles of kits built by people who are very good at what they do.

But where are the ordinary Joes and Janes? (and it's almost entirely Joes, by the way). These are the people who build to a much inferior level, like the not quite completed Soviet BA-3 armoured car above built by yours truly. Granted, I don't see why anyone would regularly want to see large numbers of pictures of or articles on such pedestrian accomplishments in their monthly model magazine. But here's my point: one gets the strong impression that the only people who build like I do are children. Is this really so? Are all the adults out there building musuem quality planes, ships and tanks? Somehow I doubt it.

If I had the time and the desire to build to the level displayed in your typical modelling magazine, perhaps I could do so. But to me, that means less fun and more work.

Am I the only one in the hobby who thinks this way? Something for the modelling magazines to consider: maybe if you had a monthly column (say, one page long) devoted to the thoughts of less accomplished builders you could actually make your magazines more interesting.

I like how innocently aggressive the boyish Jane, in her ignorance, gets with the tight-laced showgirl: a sharp clash of butch and femme, I'd say. I get an enticing sense of how vulnerable Katie might be if Jane were to let go of herself. (Yeah, I know she's supposed to fall in love with a guy in that movie, but I think that was a mistake.)

I sometimes think the middle class, the class that most loved and supported Hitler, is nasty in part because it feels itself so terribly judged by the reality of the class spectra above and below it. The middle class's capitalist belief that the cream inevitably and justly rises to the top and becomes rich makes the middle class feel inferior to these wealthier persons, but its lingering Christian faith that God will take the side of the poor and turn the tables against those better off than them makes the middle class aware of some great nemesis deservedly coming its way. It therefor sees itself as a class of ne'er-do-well losers and over-privileged gluttons at one and the same time.

A poor person might trust in God's vengeance and a rich person in the authority of her bank account, but the person in the middle is damned whether she worships God or Mammon. Hence the bile. She can't win -- short of giving up what she has to the poor or clawing her way to the top of the money mountain. Her only road to a kind of shaky self-respect is to see herself as the inexplicable victim of both rich and poor. But she, like Hitler, is always fighting a two front war, and that is a very unstable proposition.

WRITING LITERARY FICTION

is one of the few specialized activities where the non-specialist tends to take precedence over those who really know what they are doing. When somebody wants someone to fly a plane they hire a pilot. If someone is needed to perform surgery a surgeon is called, and if a new office building is required you generally get people with the right know-how to design and make these things. But when it comes to publishing novels the first and best opportunities tend to be handed to celebrities, friends of clebrities, well connected individuals of one sort or another, people who are very good at and recognized for something other than writing, people with whatever problems are fashionable at the moment, and literary apparatchiks who have spent more time and energy on self-promotion than actual writing.

If there is anything left over after all the above groups have been satisfied, once in a while an actual writer without anything to commend her but the quality of her work just might squeak by the censors and get a book published.

since I've blogged here. I am not the most regular blogger in the world, though I am a fairly enduring one. When I have some time not taken up by my day job or the exasperating folderol of daily life I am more likely to spend it writing fiction rather than blogging or taking care of my presence on the web. Perhaps this is the reason that literary agents and publishers (other than in the erotica presses, which are much more democratic) have nothing for me but form rejection letters: I am not a celebrity.

But I'm also a stubborn little bitch. So I'm going to make it anyway.

because I am against Canada's war in Afghanistan. How do I know this? I saw a bumper sticker recently that read,

"If you don't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them."

Damn! That's clever. Whoever said everyone on the Right is stupid? Now suppose I had a car, and suppose I put a bumper sticker on it that read as follows:

"Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan deserve to die."

Yeah, I know the naked nastiness of this would not have any wit to make it look like wisdom, unlike the politically correct bon mots of whatever militarist Voltaire is writing bumper stickers for our solid citizens these days. But ask yourself this: how would my hypothetical bumper sticker be any more vicious, or any less just than that of whatever perspicacious lemming (quoted above) formed his magisterial judgement of the peace movement?

Canada, watch out. You are allowing militarism to make the civilian feel small and unworthy to criticize. These feelings are always useful in the service of reaction.

They fought fascism in Spain while so much of the rest of the world was just hoping fascism would go away. These Canadians did not wait for their governments or the bourgeois press to tell them what to think or what to do.

But are they ever remembered on Remembrance Day? Alas, they were Leftists. And Leftists who go to war without state sanction must be sent down the memory hole. Doubtless they would be called "terrorists" now: the bourgeoisie's pet word for violence not sanctioned by the governments of alleged democracies.

CELEBRITY

The existence of the Celebrity is the result of an imposed ontological competition: one cannot BE unless one IS more than another IS. Just as in capitalism prosperity is not possible for all because capitalism necessitates the exploitation of many, in capitalism there cannot be anything like universal wealth of being. In capitalism people are pushed into self-contempt just as they are pushed into poverty; both self-contempt and poverty are built into the system.

Wealth in capitalism is generated by poverty. Being in capitalism is generated by feelings of worthlessness. In capitalism, if one wants prosperity one must emulate the capitalist and exploit workers. Likewise, capitalism pressures one to enjoy peace with the self by finding a way of consigning the masses to the role of inferior and spectator. Hence, genuine love of self and of other are always, even if not consciously or directly, at war with capital.

What I am criticizing here is the very structure of pride, in the worst sense of that word. Beware the eyes that take in the light and give none back.
